At HENNGE, innovation and teamwork drive our mission every day. In our Casual Talk interview series, we spotlight various HENNGE teams to give potential applicants an inside look at the technology, processes, personalities, and culture that make up our dynamic work environment.
Jazman Barizi (Jazz) of the engineering talent acquisition team speaks with two key members of our HENNGE Tadrill team: Camille Rosewright, a back-end engineer, and Haruki Kuriwada, a front-end engineer.
Read on for exclusive insights into their work, the challenges they face, and what it means to be part of this diverse, dynamic HENNGE team!
Meet the Engineers
First, let’s begin with some introductions.
Camille Rosewright is a back-end engineer hailing from Chicago in the US. She joined HENNGE in December 2022.
Haruki Kuriwada from Japan is a front-end engineer in the team, joined HENNGE in April 2024.
Tracking Tadrill: Product and Purpose

Camille: Absolutely. Tadrill is designed to enhance our customers’ IT literacy, particularly in identifying and responding to cyber threats. The name “Tadrill” stands for Targeted Attack Drill, and it’s also a nod to the Japanese word “tadoreru,” which means to track or trace a mountain path.
The product consists of two main components: training and reporting. IT admins can send simulated phishing attacks or other malicious emails to their employees as a drill. Employees then have the chance to recognize and report these emails. The goal is to empower employees to spot and report suspicious emails in real-world scenarios, minimizing potential damage from cyber-attacks.

Jazz: Can you give us an example of how customers are using Tadrill?

Haruki: Sure. Companies often use Tadrill to send training emails to their employees. We provide about 30 templates for these training emails, and we’re planning to add more. Eventually, users will also be able to create their own templates. The idea is to make it as easy as possible for IT admins to train their teams in recognizing cyber threats.

Jazz: Is Tadrill part of the HENNGE One suite?

Camille: Yes. Originally, Tadrill was a standalone product, but now it’s been renewed and included in the HENNGE One suite.

Jazz: And how about the tech stacks you’re both using?

Haruki: On the front end, we’re mainly using Svelte, a modern UI framework. It’s relatively new, especially compared to React or Vue, and I’m still getting to grips with it since I hadn’t used it before joining. The syntax is close to HTML and CSS, so it’s quite intuitive if you have experience with those. We’re also using Tailwind CSS, which has helped us clean up a lot of legacy code.

Camille: On the back end, we use Go, along with Amazon Web Services (AWS) for our cloud infrastructure, GitHub Actions for CI/CD, Docker for containerization, and Terraform for infrastructure as code.

Building Together: Development, Collaboration, and Quality

Jazz: Alright, so how does your team approach product development and communication?

Camille: For back-end development, we organize our tasks by priority. For example, our recent focus was on the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) tasks for the Tadrill release on July 1st. We work closely to ensure we’re aligned on priorities and goals.

Haruki: We have daily stand-up meetings to discuss any urgent tasks and use Slack for communication. We also rely on webhooks in GitHub Actions to keep everyone informed about what’s happening next. This setup makes it easier for us to stay on track and collaborate effectively.

Jazz: How do you ensure the quality of the product?

Camille: We’re constantly improving our quality assurance process. We’ve implemented end-to-end testing for both back-end and front-end, in addition to unit tests. This helps us catch issues early and ensure the product is stable.

Haruki: We run these tests through GitHub Actions, and we have integration tests running every time we push to the remote repository. It’s an ongoing effort to maintain and enhance the product’s quality.

Flexible Working Styles to Foster Innovation and Teamwork

Jazz: What exciting projects are you both working on right now?

Haruki: I’m excited about integrating Tailwind CSS. It’s been great to clean up a lot of old code and see how far we’ve come. There’s something really satisfying about making the codebase cleaner and more efficient.

Camille: For me, it’s been exciting to work on adding mobile support to Tadrill. This feature was highly requested by our users, and it’s been a great learning experience for me, as I hadn’t worked on mobile development before.

Jazz: It sounds like you both have some really interesting work going on. Can you tell us more about the team itself? What’s the structure like?

Camille: Our team has six members, plus one additional person from another team who’s helping out with front-end development. We’re quite diverse, with members from Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the US, Turkey, and Australia. It’s a great mix of cultures and perspectives.
In terms of working style, we have at least one day a week in the office and the rest of the time we are free to choose, remote, hybrid, or in-office, depending on what is happening.

Haruki: I’m usually in the office three or four days a week. As an engineer I need to communicate with others a lot, so I find it much easier to put quick questions to people in person and I often find that I learn more by speaking with colleagues face-to-face. It’s great that we have that flexibility to find the styles that best suit everyone.

Jazz: I’m interested that you said there is also someone from another team who’s working on this project with you. Is this common?

Camille: Firstly, it’s a great way to leverage diverse skill sets across the company and allocate resources where they’re most needed. But yes, I think the flexibility is also there within the company DNA. If there’s something you’re interested in and have a good opportunity to pursue it, HENNGE will support and try to make it happen.

Jazz: How does your team handle decision-making?

Camille: We have a pretty flat structure within the team. While some decisions, like customer feature requests, are prioritized by our project manager, most other decisions are made collectively. We discuss our options openly and come to a consensus on the best course of action.
Overcoming Hurdles and Horizons

Jazz: Haruki, as someone who’s new to the team, what challenges have you faced?

Haruki: One of the biggest challenges has been dealing with legacy code, which can be time-consuming. However, we address this through regular communication and knowledge-sharing within the team. It makes the tasks more manageable.

Jazz: How does your team approach the introduction of new tools and technology?

Haruki: There’s a lot of openness to trying new things here. For instance, I proposed using Tailwind CSS because I saw the potential benefits, and the team was on board with trying it out. It’s great to work in an environment where new ideas are welcomed.

Camille: We’ve also adopted tools like Svelte and Go because they offered us the chance to learn something new while solving our specific needs. The team is always open to exploring new technologies, and that’s one of the things I love about working here.
The Ideal Tadrill Candidate

Jazz: What kind of personality traits do you think would be a good fit for someone considering joining the Tadrill team?

Haruki: Curiosity is key. We’re all passionate about exploring new technologies and pushing the boundaries of what we know.

Camille: I agree. You need to be eager to learn new things and be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team. We have a startup-like dynamic within the company, so everyone’s contributions can have a big impact.

Jazz: Finally, what message would you give to anyone thinking of applying to join the Tadrill team?

Haruki: As someone who is new here, I can say that it has been such a positive experience. There’s lots to learn but everyone around me has been so supportive, whether it’s discussing ideas in meetings, or just tips of how to settle in and truly get the most out of the HENNGE experience!
