HENNGE K.K. (headquarters: Shibuya, Tokyo, Representative Director, Chief Executive Officer: Kazuhiro Ogura) is pleased to announce that over 500,000 companies now use HENNGE Secure Download, a solution for de-PPAP, just three years after its launch. HENNGE Secure Download is a core part of HENNGE One, a leading cloud security service in Japan, and offers a solution to ensure secure file exchange.
HENNGE also discovered that the proportion of emails with attachments sent by the PPAP* method had declined by less than half over the last three years. That indicates a clear trend of de-PPAP in Japanese companies.

*PPAP is an abbreviation for a method of sharing files via email, sending encrypted ZIP files and the password separately. It was once common in Japan, but in recent years, the trend toward "de-PPAP," or file sharing through other means, has accelerated, especially in public offices and businesses, because of its inadequate security and convenience.

About the number of over 500,000 user companies

In October 2021, HENNGE started providing a de-PPAP solution, HENNGE Secure Download, as a part of HENNGE One, a cloud security service. HENNGE Secure Download has received high praise for its easy-to-use interface and robust security from local governments and various enterprises, including listed companies, expanding its accumulated customer base to 350,000+ user companies in September 2023. And now, in July 2024, the accumulated number has exceeded 500,000*.

*The recipients receiving the attached files via HENNGE Secure Download verify their email address before downloading. HENNGE counted the domain variations, excluding the domains for free emails and email service providers, and estimated the number of user companies based on the variations.

How common is de-PPAP now?

To reveal the trend of de-PPAP in Japanese companies, HENNGE investigated the change in the means of sending emails with attachments, comparing October 2021 (shortly after the HENNGE Secure Download launch) and July 2024 (just before this press release).
The results show a significant shift: the ratio of emails with attachments sent by PPAP has decreased by more than half, from 29.4% in 2021 to 12.4% in 2024. These numbers demonstrate a clear trend toward de-PPAP adoption within Japanese companies over the past three years.

*Survey method
The population for the survey is all emails with attachments sent by HENNGE One user during the following sampling period. HENNGE counts emails with encrypted attachments as those sent by PPAP.

- Sampling period
2021: Sunday, October 3 - Saturday, October 9
2024: Sunday, July 7 - Saturday, July 13
*The sampling period is from the first Sunday to Saturday to ensure comparable conditions, such as the number of business days.

HENNGE will continue supporting customers' secure file exchange by disseminating HENNGE Secure Download and HENNGE One, enhancing companies' security and convenience and facilitating collaboration with easy-to-use file sharing.

■ About HENNGE Secure Download
In October 2021, HENNGE introduced HENNGE Secure Download, a de-PPAP solution within its HENNGE One cloud security service. Secure Download seamlessly integrates into the user's email workflow. When an email with attachments is sent, the files are automatically uploaded to secure cloud storage. The recipient receives the email along with a PDF containing a unique download URL. To access the files, the recipient verifies their email address and receives an authentication code through a separate channel. That ensures that only authorized individuals can download the attachments. Additionally, if the sender accidentally attaches incorrect files, they can invalidate the URLs even after the email has been sent.
Since June 2023, HENNGE Secure Download has expanded its capabilities with HENNGE Secure Download for Box. This integration allows users to leverage Box, a popular cloud storage solution among businesses, for attachment uploads.
